SUMMARY:Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia Translational Work-in-Progress (ADRD-TWIP): Lihui Tu\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:“Intraindividual sleep–activity dynamics as markers of neurocognitive risk”\nSpeaker: Lihui Tu\, PhD\nPostdoctoral Researcher\, Herbert and Jacqueline Krieger Klein Alzheimer’s Research Center; Institute for Health \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, October 7\, 2026\, 12-1 PM \nZoom: https://rutgers.zoom.us/j/94769804345?pwd=IMqJIIvuDmRl997R6O4U4NKbt6UWfs.1\nMeeting code: 947 6980 4345\nPasscode: 454288 \nWith a background in clinical psychiatry\, Dr. Lihui Tu earned his Ph.D. in Psychiatry from Peking University. He specializes in Alzheimer’s disease\, focusing on large-scale data analysis and longitudinal modeling. Before joining Rutgers\, he spent over a year as a postdoctoral researcher at RIKEN in Japan. His current research examines cognitive aging within Native American populations. \nDr. Tu will discuss his specific aims and intended methodology for a potential grant application examining intraindividual sleep–activity dynamics as wearable-derived markers of neurocognitive risk. He is interested in feedback and suggestions to refine the characterization of temporal features and sleep–activity phenotypes\, and to identify the most appropriate approaches for relating these measures to cognitive performance\, cognitive change\, and incident MCI/ADRD. Dr. Tu’s research focuses on cognitive aging and ADRD\, with particular interests in digital phenotyping\, longitudinal data\, and scalable markers of early neurocognitive vulnerability.

SUMMARY:Special Iron's Lecture Colloquium: Yael Hanein\, PhD (Tel Aviv University)
DESCRIPTION:“Listening to the Body: Soft Electronics\, Electrophysiology and the Physics of Human–Machine Interfaces”\nSpeaker: Yael Hanein\, PhD\nProfessor of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, Tel Aviv University \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, October 7\, 2026\, 3:30 – 4:30 PM \nLocation: 330W\, Physics & Astronomy Building\, Busch Campus \nZoom Link: https://rutgers.zoom.us/j/95124198614?pwd=dnBzWnhUTmVSRjJZaVR1QnpvazduZz09 \nAbstract: The human body continuously generates electrical signals that reflect neural activity\, muscle activation\, eye movements\, cardiac function\, and cognitive state. Accessing this rich information outside the laboratory\, however\, requires interfaces that can conform to the body\, remain stable during natural behavior\, and resolve weak physiological signals in the presence of motion and environmental noise. In this talk\, I will describe our development of soft\, wearable electrode technologies that bring electrophysiological measurements from controlled laboratory experiments into everyday environments. I will discuss how advances in materials\, electrode–skin interfaces\, sensing electronics\, and signal analysis enable high-quality EEG\, EMG\, EOG\, and ECG recordings using unobtrusive wearable systems. Examples will include mapping facial muscle activity\, decoding gestures and silent speech\, monitoring sleep\, and quantifying physiological and cognitive states. I will conclude with our current efforts to move from sensing to interaction\, combining multimodal physiological measurements\, AI\, and electrical stimulation to create adaptive human–machine interfaces that can infer state and intention and ultimately interact with the nervous system in closed loop. \nFor more information\, go to the colloquium webpage:  https://physics.rutgers.edu/events/colloquium
