Dr. Bonnie Firestein Promoted to Distinguished Professor and Published Study in Science Advances

Congratulations to Dr. Bonnie Firestein on her promotion to Distinguished Professor. Dr. Firestein, a BHI member and faculty member in the Department of Cell Biology & Neuroscience at Rutgers-New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences, studies the role of guanine metabolism in neuronal development and recovery after injury. The Firestein Lab identified the postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95) interactor cypin (cytosolic PSD-95 interactor; aka guanine deaminase or GDA), a purine metabolic enzyme, as a core regulator of neuronal development that directly interacts with the cytoskeleton and alters its dynamics.

Dr. Firestein’s new study, published in Science Advances, reveals a critical role for the brain protein cypin in maintaining strong connections between brain cells, essential for learning and memory. Dr. Feierstein’s lab has previously received pilot funding from the BHI and the CCNP.
