Dr. Brianna Altman Receives NIDA K23 Grant to Study Emotional Distress and Cigarette Smoking

Dr. Brianna Altman, Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Psychology at the School of Arts and Sciences, RU-NB, and BHI member, has been awarded a K23 grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse for her project “A Multi-Method Study of Momentary Distress Intolerance and Combustible Cigarette Smoking”.
The study will use a combination of qualitative interviews and 28-day ecological momentary assessment to explore how distress intolerance, the inability to withstand aversive emotional or physical states, fluctuates throughout the day and influences smoking behaviors among adults experiencing emotional distress. By examining both internal states and situational factors in real time, Dr. Altman aims to uncover actionable targets for smoking cessation interventions tailored to moments of greatest vulnerability. This work will help advance personalized approaches to reduce smoking-related health disparities in populations with anxiety, depression, and other forms of distress.
