Dr. Hai Sun Receives NINDS R18 Grant to Develop Innovative Closed-Loop Device for Epilepsy Treatment

Dr. Hai Sun, BHI member and Associate Professor, Assistant Director of Research, Assistant Residency Program Director, Vice Chair of the Clinical Affairs in the Department of Neurosurgery at RWJMS, has received an R18 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for his project “An Epileptic-Network Closed-loop Stimulation Device (enCLS) Designed to Target and Arrest Ictogenesis”.

This project focuses on developing a new treatment option, enCLS, for patients suffering from drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. The innovative device will utilize findings from the Sun Lab regarding the mechanisms of seizure onset, allowing for more precise predictions of when seizures will occur. It will then deliver neurostimulation to the epileptic brain network to prevent seizures before they start. The goal is to provide a proof-of-concept demonstration showing the effectiveness of this approach in helping patients become seizure-free. The team aims to transition this technology from the laboratory to first-in-human use within five years. Dr. Sun will lead a team of investigators from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Emory School of Medicine.
